Kitty Hawk Kites, the Outer Banks-based sports adventure pioneer, has launched the Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Resort at Waves Village. Located on Hatteras Island in Rodanthe, N.C., the prime kiteboarding spot offers just the tonic for vacationers who seek smart accommodations and on-the-water adventure. “Hatteras Island is one of the best places in the United States to experience kiteboarding, and we’ve offered lessons and equipment rentals here for more than a decade,” said John Harris, president of Kitty Hawk Kites. “Now visitors can enjoy an all-inclusive experience with upscale accommodations, shopping, dining and a relaxed Outer Banks ambiance you won’t find anywhere else.” Encompassing four acres on the Pamlico Sound, Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Resort at Waves Village features nine luxury, sound-front condominiums, available for weekly or partial rentals; shops, including Kitty Hawk Kites, Life is Good and Forbes Candies; Route 12 Coffee & Tea Company, specializing in fresh locally roasted coffee, smoothies and bakery items; and Good Winds Seafood and Wine Bar, serving lunch and dinner overlooking the sound—and beautiful sunsets. In the middle of the resort is Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Center, approved by the Professional Air Sports Association (PASA). Here, PASA-certified staff members teach a variety of courses for all skill levels, including a two-day “Fast Track Kiteboarding Camp.” Experienced kiteboarders will appreciate the spacious launch site, air compressors, outdoor showers and demo center, where they may rent gear to use during their stay or try out new equipment before purchasing. Those who are new to the sport will discover kiteboarding is, well, a breeze. On average, winds blow 13 miles per hour on Hatteras Island, year-round, allowing for lengthy, consistent kiteboarding rides. The Pamlico Sound’s knee-deep waters and clean sandy bottom add to the experience, creating a flat water riding paradise. “We have great ‘kiteable’ conditions nine months out of the year,” added Harris. In addition to kiteboarding, the Kitty Hawk Kites Kiteboarding Resort at Waves Village offers a variety of watersports activities and free demos including stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. During the summer, “Kids Day” is Wednesday from 4-7 p.m., during which kids can toss water balloons, get wet and try out some of the toys and games from the Kitty Hawk Kites store. Surfers and advanced kiteboarders seeking an ocean ride will find some of the best surf on the East Coast located just across the street from the resort. Earlier this year, Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, or “Dr. Beach,” named Cape Hatteras number four on his 2010 listing of best beaches in America. After a day on the water, vacationers can retire to their sound-front resort accommodations—and unwind. With more than 1,600 square feet of living space, each unit features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining area, living room, four television sets with DVDs and a private balcony with a hot tub overlooking the Pamlico Sound. Other amenities include a swimming pool, equipment lockers and free Wi-Fi. Visitors may choose from three interior design styles: Coastal, Urban and Life is Good, with furniture and home décor featuring the popular retail brand. Summer rentals are still available; for reservations or additional information, visit www.wavesvillage.com or call (252) 305-2629.
